The need to start insulin affects patients differently. Some may feel angry or betrayed; others may fear that insulin will add to the burden and stress of managing diabetes, and others may feel overwhelmed or frightened.
Mytonomy conducted a pilot study with three large academic health systems to determine attitudes toward insulin use and the efficacy of a video-based patient education platform. The patients studied were an ethnically diverse T2DM population who had been prescribed insulin within the last nine months.
During this pilot study, patients new to taking insulin were provided short 30-second to 3-minute long Mytonomy videos focused on insulin injection technique, medication use, and lifestyle management, as well as topics such as the need to overcome stigma and embrace insulin therapy.
Every patient was asked to begin the study by providing baseline attitudes toward the use of insulin and completing the Patient Activation Measure® (PAM®) survey. After watching culturally relevant microlearning videos, patients completed an assessment of their attitudes and perspectives toward insulin use and completed the PAM® survey again to assess activation.
Engagement Rate: 90.5% of the enrolled patients completed 42 questions and watched more than four videos
Completion Rate: 42% of patients completed all requirements of the study
Response Rate During the First Three Days: 53% of patients viewed all videos within the first three days to the pilot study
Average Viewership: On average, 21 unique videos (out of 56) were viewed by patients in a self-guided manner, without interaction from staff
