Words can empower people and support self-management, but they can also hurt and make living with diabetes more challenging. Mytonomy has incorporated the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) language recommendations into our content because language matters to us.
Mytonomy’s videos on using empowering language help educate and change the way we speak with and about people with diabetes. Our goal is to help change the conversation and inspire healthcare providers, the media and the entire diabetes community to use words that are person-centered, strengths-based, empowering and decrease the stigma that can arise from language that causes blame and shame. Ultimately, the words we use can make living with diabetes easier and improve health and wellbeing.
Learn more about why language matters in the two videos on the right. The first helps people understand language concepts related to empowering people with diabetes. The second addresses the stigma associated with diabetes and how the diabetes community can help change the conversation.
